The methods and techniques learned in EST 3117 and 3118 will be put into practice in a lesson situation at Therapeutic Riding at Centenary (TRAC). Under the supervision of certified instructors, students will experience all aspects of organizing and running therapeutic riding activities, including evaluating new students and keeping progress records, evaluating and schooling horses, acting as lesson aides, and assisting in hippo therapy sessions. Emphasis is placed on learning to analyze each rider's strengths and weaknesses and adapting the teaching of riding skills accordingly. Students will work with Mentor Instructors to develop specific physical and cognitive goals for each individual. In the fall semester, students will complete the requirements for the Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor (CTRI) Application in the areas of equine handling and management and disability knowledge. In the spring semester, students will complete at least 25 hours of supervised teaching. By the end of the second semester, students will complete requirements for the CTRI Application in the areas of supervised teaching and videoed demonstration of teaching skills. Students who successfully complete both semesters of practicum will be ready to submit an application for CTRI testing.
