This course is designed for non-science majors, and is an introduction to the basic principles of chemistry. It includes an overview of laboratory safety, as well as an introduction to the scientific method, and instruction in the use of basic equipment for the chemistry lab. This course is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of chemical principles operating in their daily life. Chemistry works synergistically with many other scientific and non-scientific disciplines including physics, biology, psychology, art, history, sports, pharmaceuticals, and many other fields. Students are required to attend a weekly laboratory that reinforces the content material. Labs are designed to provide students an opportunity to develop critical thinking skills through hypothesis synthesis, utilizing equipment and technology, data collection, and formation of conclusions.
