This course is designed to provide language teachers with an introduction to linguistics and second language acquisition. This course will cover linguistic analysis in the foundational areas of linguistics: phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. These foundational components of linguistics set the stage for future literacy acquisition. Students will also explore the cognitive and social processes in second language acquisition. Topics will include: how children and adults acquire a second language, how first and second language learning differs, individual variable factors in second language learning (age, motivation, affect, attitudes), and the role of language instruction in second language learning.
