From saying first words to reading first words, this class begins by painting a picture to illustrate the earliest stages of language and literacy learning. As students progress throughout the semester, they fluidly dive into evidence-based best practices and develop strategies to support oral language development, concepts of print, phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and writing. A significant portion of this class is dedicated to defining, planning, developing, and assessing these foundational components of literacy instruction. Additionally, students will learn how to design a supportive and engaging learning environment that supports developmentally appropriate practices, utilize assessments to drive instruction and intervention; align curricular standards; create joyful, authentic experiences that shape language and literacy; and attend to the needs of multilingual learners of English and striving readers.
