EDU 3073 explores the research that supports and explains the developing and independent stages of literacy development as students grow into proficient readers and writers. Students will explore a variety of evidence-based best practices for teaching and assessing comprehending and composing texts, word study (phonics, spelling, morphology, etc.), expanding vocabulary, developing fluency, and knowledge building. Students will learn how to positively support the growth of striving readers and writers as well as multilingual learners of English through differentiated practices, assessments, and interventions. A great focus will be on the importance of creating a learning environment that motivates learners to become lifelong readers and writers as they discover their reader identity.
